Blizzard has announced that they will not be requiring World of Warcraft forum players to reveal their names. This announcement has brought a great deal of relief to the entire community, as many Blizzard gamers viewed the company’s shift to Real ID as a terrible idea that would lead to a large loss of privacy by gamers.
Over 20,000 posts angrily rebuked blizzard on their forums, and thankfully Blizzard listened.
The UK has announced that they will not be investigating the company for privacy concerns – which allows Blizzard to walk away from the error unscathed.
A bit worse off, the ESRB received a number of complains and replied with a mass email that revealed the identity of each complainant. The gaming industry needs to work on better privacy.
